Nurses face enormously stressful working conditions in South Africa.
Their workload is overwhelming, with a national nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:468.
They face many of the same problems as their patients, such as poverty, violence, HIV/AIDS and lack of support.

Being able to detect and deal comprehensively with the problems of their patients improves health workers' sense of efficacy, and ultimately contributes to work satisfaction.

The PMHP training programme fills a gap in nurse training and at the same time pays attention to nurses' mental health.
We believe that addressing the mental health needs of nursing staff will improve care given to patients.
