The following objectives guide the Project’s activities:

1. Service Delivery

  • To provide mental health services, routinely, at the same site where women receive maternity care.
  • To provide a service model for integrating mental health into maternal care services throughout the public health system.
  • To promote an effective, efficient and relevant service, which achieves universal coverage.

3. Research

  • To generate locally-produced research that is informed by practice.
  • To develop an evidence-based model for scaling-up service delivery.
  • To disseminate results widely, through a range of outlets.
It might appear anomalous to give attention to perinatal depression in developing countries, where other health problems seem so compelling, but it is likely that these are precisely the places where mental health is worst and contributes most significantly to the severity of other health problems.

2. Teaching & Training

  • To provide training to a range of health workers.
  • To empower, affirm, and raise awareness among health workers in order to shift attitudes and practices towards supporting integrated maternal mental health care.

4. Advocacy & Policy Development

  • To raise awareness about maternal mental health.
  • To inform role-players about effective interventions.
  • To maintain a public profile of the PMHP.
  • To engage in meaningful and creative advocacy strategies aimed at policy development.
